Trevi Fountain: the square and the city in real time

The webcam shows one of the most famous places in Rome’s historic centre: the Trevi Fountain and the small square surrounding it. The live view makes it possible to observe not only the monument, but also the rhythm of the square, the light on its surfaces and the presence of visitors throughout the day.

The fountain in the heart of Baroque Rome

The Trevi Fountain is the monumental endpoint of the Acqua Vergine, the ancient aqueduct that still supplies the fountain today. The present arrangement was designed in the eighteenth century by Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini. The great façade of Palazzo Poli becomes an integral part of the composition, dominated by the figure of Oceanus and a complex arrangement of rocks, statues and water features.

The square is relatively small compared with the size of the fountain. This closeness creates the theatrical effect that makes Trevi so distinctive: arriving from the narrow streets of the centre, the monument appears suddenly, almost filling the field of view.

What to observe live

The webcam shows how visitor numbers change at different times, the effect of sunlight and shadows on the sculptures and the evening lighting. The surface of the water and the travertine respond very differently to morning, afternoon and evening light, making the same view continually variable.

The live view can also be useful before a visit to get a sense of the square’s actual atmosphere. It does not replace official information on access arrangements or regulations, but immediately shows how lively the area is at that moment.

What to see nearby

From Piazza di Trevi, Piazza di Spagna, Via del Corso, Piazza Colonna, the Pantheon and Piazza Venezia can be reached on foot. This is one of the areas where the fabric of the historic centre allows numerous monuments to be linked by short routes, continually moving between large squares, lanes and shopping streets.
